SIDE KICK

The little creature inside my tummy starts to practise its side kick. I can feel the tiny and funny movements under my skin.

I feel very dizzy today and have serious headache, I think I do not have enough energy, I should eat more and resume the prenatal yoga practice.

The mid autumn festival is on next Tue but I already feel festive!!!

100 days of pregnancy

HURRAY TODAY IS MY 100 DAYS OF PREGNANCY!!!!!

I find that I look a bit older, some fine lines on my forehead and under eyes... Hope it is just an illusion...

Lanterns

Lucas had already got 3 lanterns - 1 from my mom and 2 from Jeff's mom.

Frankly, one kid only needs one lantern, I do hope to donate two to some charity or orphanage, I think many poor children are wising to receive one.

Sometimes I do think we give too much to babies. Once you have too much, you will not treasure what you have. This is a simple economics theory.

Lucas loves raisins

He shouldn't be a shopping mall baby

This weekend, we planned to go beach or country park with Long Long, he is an outdoor boy, he loves tree and sunshine.

However, I started to wonder if Hong Kong is still a nice habitat for human... the air is seriously polluted, a layer of supending particles blocks our vision. What you can see is grey colour.

Since I am having blocking nose and sore throat, and Jeffrey uses to have allergic nose, we felt extremely unbearable.

On Saturday, we had a bus tour with baby, we didn't drive to reduce the emission of gas. We know that it helps just extremely small, but at least we try to save our environment.

Long Long was very exciting and felt asleep in the bus when we were commuting to Causeway Bay. Well, you can imagine how polluted it was.

Luckily we all did not faint in the smog, but we did not dare to go Victoria Park, we only stayed in shopping mall.

Sigh~~ where is our blue sky??

Hope the weather will be getting better next week.

Take turns

Someone compliant that I have not not updated Manki's Matrix for a long time, but he forgets he is also one of the authors of this blog, supposingly.

Well, Lucas and us had great time last week, but was sick since last Sunday. He got cough at first, and then fever for a few days. Luckily he recovers so well and the high temperature has gone.

This morning he was in very good mood and made funny faces to me. I don't know why he picks all those interesting facial expressions suddenly. Someone says kids grow much faster when they are sick. It sounds very contradicting, but just imagine, once a person has gone through some difficulties, he made some breakthrough and will become a bit different.

The theory seems unconvincing but quite makes sense to me, haha!

Well, it's my turn to have running nose, arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

A roomful of happiness

I love my wallpaper especially because I can imagine myself flying in the sky!
Come and visit me anytime!!!

My tummy in 12-week pregnancy

STUNNING!!!!! A PERFECT CURVE!

Spice baby

Did I tell you my taste changing dramatically during this pregnancy?

I love spicy food suddenly, this is what I seldom touched before...

My most favourite soup is spicy and sour soup, a very popular soup in Northern China.

Most of my friend bet that I will have a baby girl this time, then, logically, my new baby will be a spice girl.

Well, nowadays girls have to be a bit spicy to survive in this brutal world. A little bit is okay, too much will become bitchy. Although most successful women especially in career place are extremely bitchy, I still believe being a gentle and wise lady is smarter.

Energizer Bunny

Didn't know where the strength came from, last Sunday we went to many places with Lucas in one day. Here is our route:

10:40am From home to Shatin for my violin lesson
12:00noon From Shatin to Victoria Peak, to experience the polluted air in this most crowded Causeway Bay
2:00pm Lunch in a CWB local noodle food stall, yummy.
3:00pm From CWB to Cyberport, left a high density place to a low density place.
6:00pm From Cyberport to Pacific Place, Admiralty for dinner
8:15pm From Admiralty back home

Lucas was maintaining in natural high status for the whole day, until 11:30pm that night, with the new toy bus we bought for him that day.

What I want to do today?

What I wanna do in office are:

1. Sleeping
2. Sneaking back home
3. Throw up the Korean lunch set I bought back and ate alone inside my 1m x 1m cubicle.

Poorly, all three things cannot be done before I stepped my feet in home. What I vomited in office toilet is just air.

Interesting!!! A really great highlight on Monday.

Spending a whole night with Lucas

Last night Lucas rushed to our room after his late night milk. Jeff carried him onto our bed and asked whether he wanted to stay with us.

Then this little baby lied down immediately between us.

We brought him his little pillow, cushions and blanket, then he slept quietly with us... until 2 something in the midnight.

Then he crawled between us restlessly, kept changing positions and poses the whole night.

We couldn't sleep thoroughly, but when I looked at this little angel sleeping carefree and peacefully, I smiled gently and kissed his chubby little cheek.

Morning Sickness at night

Last night, I had no appetite for a proper dinner, I had just swallowed 3/4 of a hamburger, and a bunch of french fries.

Then I threw up half of the french fries afterward.

Then I felt extremely thirsty during sleep, and also woke up to have bathroom visit for several time. Not to mention some nightmares came as a package.

A headache since last evening still accompanies me today. Thanks morning sickness, you 'brighten' my life.

Ahhhhhhhh.....

Fatigue

Thanks Jeff for sending this announcement.

Frankly, these first few week is pretty suffering. I experience morning sickness (a misleading term, because the sickness can happen any moment, like what in my case right now), nausea and sore bones.

I guess I had lost several pounds, thanks to the pregnancy in these weeks.

Every morning, I want someone sticks me on the bed then I can call my office that I cannot go for work for this reason.

At one moment, I am starving, but in the next moment, I feel full and want to throw up.

Yawning is the most frequent action I take everyday, apart from breathing.

Usually, all these symptoms will only exist in the first 12 weeks for pregnancy, I am in the 9th week, still have 3 weeks to go.....

Frankly, I do not even have strength to take bath, not to mention to do all those reporting, presentation and analyzing data? Even myself is skeptical about my work quality, in such condition.

Gosh, Jelly just informed we have a new project for several countries, thanks God!!!!!

Happy moment with Lucas

Every morning, Lucas wakes up around 8 something, I let him sit on my laps, and shares my breakfast when I groom up myself in front of the beauty parlor.

He then eats a piece of bread with satisfaction, with a light grin across his chubby face, playing the stuff on my desk, then watching the news on TV, and smiles to those pretty anchors because he thinks the girls are talking to him.

This is the happy moment for me every morning. The drive for me to face everyday challenge.

Doddle Pro - Lucas's new favourite

Now Lucas loves playing Doodle Pro, he always writes and draws in his special ways.

Thanks God he also loves reading, I am sure this will make his life more interesting.

When he is tried after reading or drawing, he likes to lie on your laps or belly for sleeping. Very sweet.

Tin Tin has gone

Lucas is the happiest one.

I think this decision is fair to Lucas also.

Monday, July 23, 2007

Jealous

I guess Lucas does not hang along with Tin Tin well.

Lucas became very moody tonight because he saw I played with Tin Tin and trained him to sit down.

He kept staring at me for quite a long time, but when my eyes reached him, he yelled loudly.

And when he saw we scolded the dog because it chewed fruit shell and seed, his face showed a cunning broad smile.

I think I should not attach myself too much to the puppy. We have so many family members to be close friends with Tin Tin.

We then rushed back to our room and announced to Lucas that it is the mommy-baby exclusive session, no puppy is allowed.

Disneyland Visit

Imagine we went to Disneyland under the fierce sun on July 13-14, three times - July13 morning, July 13 evening, and July 14 afternoon.

Actually we stayed in Disnelyland Hollywood hotel overnight, and we had the unlimited access pass in those two days.

Okay, it is lucky all of us remained in solid form under too much of sunshine exposure, Lucas also got sun-tanned after the two days.

After all, this is still a nice 'trip', Lucas is the happiest person among us, he ate the most (in proportion, of course), sweated the most and ran the most.

But he did not like the water-splasking parade much.

Tip toes

Guess what is the latest game Lucas likes to play? TIP TOES

He has such a pair of strong legs, he always squats and stands up suddenly and walks with tip toes. His little technique is - try to extend all the toes as wide as possible, thanks to those long toes inherited from his mom.

Lucas babbles

Lucas picks up lots of single words and sounds in these few weeks, such as:

  • A (this is the first word he speaks when he sees any text, including Chinese)
  • C or Si
  • Shoe
  • zi (purple in Mandarin, learnt from a picture card)
  • S (well... or ass... surely this is not a good moment to teach him hole)
  • Boo Boo (we don't know what it means, but sometimes he says this when pointing to a ball)

Dragon Boat Festival

Lucas and we went to Shatin Shing Mun River bank to see dragon boat competition yesterday. However, he was not very interested because the weather was quite hot and not comfortable.
See the little cute hat Lucas was wearing? Actually he is very repulsive to wear anythings on his head, including this one. When we put it on, he took it off, we had done this put-on-take-off 'game' for 10 times, he only gave up when I held his hand and explained to him why he should wear a hat...And then after 15 minutes, he pulled it up and threw on the ground finally.

A big fat sashimi feast

Don't worry, Lucas could only look, not taste the raw fish.
But he DID try to eat wasabi, he used his hand to smash the wasabi paste and intended to put it into his mouth. We stopped him in the right time.
Otherwise the stimulation of wasabi will cause two possible outcomes: 1. He is scared of all spicy food or green paste or Japanese restaurant, or 2. He falls in love in it and wants us to put it in all of his food, including milk... Wasabi milk, can you imagine?

Detachable

I feel heart broken last few days because Lucas did not attach to me... much.

He always wants to stick with Lisa, or even my mom-in-law, just not to me.

I am silly but I did cry a lot because of that.

However, when I left home for work this morning, he was looking at me by a pair of tearful eyes, stretching his little hand out to try to touch me.

But what can I do? I should get back to work...

I am feeling very hurt, but the rational me always reminds me not to be that obsessive, it will make Lucas uneasy.

Arrrrrrr, what can I do????? He is just one year old, but it seems my emotion is so moved by him...

A good reader and listener

Lucas can almost totally understand our daily conversation and have interaction with us. He can react to both Cantonese and English.

As a book lover, I also encourage my kid to read. We buy him several 'touchy-feely' books - those books with pictures in different textures and eye-catching colour which arouse children's interest to read. He loves them a lot and always says 'A' loudly when he opens the first page, no matter what is showing there.

What a cute little angel.

If we have a second child...

I have a discussion about having a second child with Jeff last night (Actually he raises this discussion all the time)...

If I have a second child and she is a baby girl, I will give her a name 'LUNA'.

Luna means moon, moon bean, god of moon...... This name matches 'LUCAS' perfectly as 'LUCAS' which means light.

Except 'Luna', I had also considered the name 'Lelia', because in Star War, the hero and heroine - the twins are called Luke Skywalker and Lelia Skywalker..... Hahahahahahha!!!

Lucas recovers well

Thanks god that Lucas is getting better and better. The red colour in eyes is fading out also, and he has no more fever.

What a great relief when you see his chubby face is coming back.

Lucas, once you get totally well, we will celebrate your birthday with you again, only three of us!!!

Kiss!!!

Roseola

Jeff brought Lucas for a medical consultation again this morning.

The doctor said he may infect Roseola, a common illness among infants from 3 months to 1 years.

For further information, please visit this link: http://www.healthline.com/adamcontent/roseola

He is still having fever, but doctor said it will not cause any big harm to him. Once rashes come out, the temperature will drop dramatically.

I do wish the red spots will come out very soon and Lucas will be recovered.

I am in office, just finished several rushing works, but my heart is already with my kid. It is so difficult to be a working mom.

'Outing therapy'

This is the fourth day of Lucas's fever. We read some articles and knows it is not common for baby to have high temperature for several days, my mom said it would happen especially he is having sore throat.

I really want to cry when seeing him suffering.

However, his mood and condition will totally changes once we bring him out, he will suddenly become very lively and cheerful, even shaking his body like dancing. But once you step into the car to get back home, he will shift to the upset 'mode' again.

We call this 'treatment' of desperation during sickness the 'Outing therapy'.

We bathed him three times today to reduce his temperature, and went out twice. I wish that he will have a sound sleep tonight!!

Birthday Fever

I mean it literally. Poor Lucas have been having fever since his birthday. Now is already the third day. We have brought him seeing a doctor and he had to prescribe antibiotic to him, as the fever had not gone in the first two days.

It really tears my heart apart I tell him I should get back to work everyday, he bursts into cry and trying to grab my shoulders.

Thanks god tomorrow is a public holiday and I can spend more time with him.

媽打07年最新髮型 - balloon head...我擔心將有一日我也會成被整對象。

1 year old

Tomorrow will be Lucas's birthday. I am still proud of what I had done one year ago - had given birth to a 7.8 lbs little human.

Not sure what birthday wishes Lucas had made in birthday parties - one with my parental family and another with Jeff's family. Everyone was having great time.

Hope I can get home early to have one more celebration event with Lucas tomorrow, only Jeff, me and him, we do not have to do anything, just hugging each others and singing birthday song.

BTW, Lucas gives a new name to his pacifiers, he calls them 'E-D'!!

My first Mother's Day

Still remember last year I was expecting Lucas would have been born on or before the Mother's Day and we could celebrate together.. Then God sent him to me about one week later, on May 21.

This year, I am being a REAL mother, with a little creature literally in my arms, I celebrated a sunny Mother's Day with him and my family. We spent our morning in Sai Kung, we 'yum Cha' there and had fun at the beach next to that restaurant. I could tell Lucas enjoyed the beach time - he even licked sand in his palms...

How can something be sweeter if you baby comes to you and kisses you cheerfully suddenly? The is what Lucas does to me always.

I am really a lucky mom. Yes, it is a difficult task to be someone's mother, but the joy your baby gives you in indescribable.

Grace, hope you enjoy your third trimester. Happy mother's day!!

Milestones reached in the 11th month

Several new things Lucas picks up this month:

1. Standing and walking - Progressively improves day by day. (Jeff impressed so much when BB was walking towards him wobbly last night).
2. Blowing kiss (most Hong Kong parents say fly kiss though... direct translation), only sends to me exclusively.
3. Understanding much more vocabularies.
4. Mimicking the sound of car engine when he plays with his toy cars or watching cars in TV.

Rashes

Poor Lucas is having rashes on his arms and legs these two days, but is getting well.

We think the flu and several allergic agents trigger it.

Apart from the rashes, Lucas is still very cheerful and active. Now he calls all women 'Ah Ma', even to the nurse in clinic.

By the way, happy 11th month birthday to him. Mama wish you get well very very soon.

Lucas gets 'pimples'??

My ill is getting better but I can barely talk today, I almost lose my voice.

Baby seems to have itchy throat as well and he coughs sometimes, and throws up after the feeding, what a pity.

This poor little thing also gets two eye-catching red spots, one on his chubby cheek, another at his ear. We suspect a bug bite him during mid night.

The one on his face look like a pimple. Baby still looks cute with a pimple!!

Hope he will get well soon.

Tuesday, April 17, 2007

When will we see the bright blue sky again?

Baby gets slight fever and running nose. Jeff is sending him to see doctor at the moment. I am being trapped in my lifeless cubicle in office.

I am still having itchy throat even I had taken 5 days of antibiotics. My doctor told me my discomfort is caused by the air pollution. The walkathon I joined last Sunday just worsened my illness, because I was exposed in an open, but air polluted area.

It demonstrates how poor air quality causes millions of loss to the society.

When can we wipe away the grey colour from our sky? When can we breathe the fresh air? Is Hong Kong still a suitable place for human habituation? How will our next generation be?

Why did our Chief executive Mr. Tsueng insist there is no serious air pollution in Hong Kong. If our government has no courage to envisage the problem, how can we seek solutions?

The situation in Hong Kong is already better than mainland China, what is the picture of those industrialised area? if an artist of impressionism has chances to visit Guangzhou, how will he depict this area on the canvas? Several strokes of grey in different magnitudes?

Many people believe China will be the next dominant nation in the coming 20 years... Do you think so? For me, it is just a fantasy. We guys only focus on 'prosperity' and 'stability' but are hopeless on some more fundamental issue, such as environmental conservation, freedom... What the country is we pass to our next generation???

More interaction!

Lucas now understands some more difficult words.

If I say 'aeoplane', he will look up immediately. Even I make a paper aeoplane for him and tell him it is a 'paper aeoplane', he will still look up the sky.

He also knows what is 'gai gai' (street), if anyone approaches him and say bringing him to street, he will open his arms to be carried eagerly.

Blossoming personalities

Lucas is reaching 10 1/2 months, his personalities emerge vividly. To summarize what kind of person he is (let use this as a check list and count how many points I can get in next 20 years ):
Determined
Cautious
Opinionated
Rebellious
Witty
Mischievous
He is a baby boy with very strong characters. He does not want you to be his boss, he knows what he needs and does hate all force-actions. When he refuses to drink milk, you will not be succeeded to force him to have another single drop. Sometimes you can convince him to follow your instructions if he agrees with your reasons though. The bad thing is sometimes he has no idea what you are talking about...

All babies are experts of mind-reading, only adults somehow lose this ability when they get older. Lucas is also excelled in this skill. When he knows you are angry by reading your face, he will pretend he is innocent and tries to make you laugh.

The only daily activity he hates is changing clothes, sometimes I feel I am wrestling with him when trying to put on a body suit for him... I am trying to get tips from parenting books about how-to-keep-your-baby-stable-and-quiet-when-dressing.

After all, Lucas is still a little baby, a coin has two faces, babies bring you both happiness and headaches. Being a parent, you need patience and also intelligence, and it would be an advantage if you also have knowledge on first-aid, psychology, biology, sports, etc, etc.

It is not easy to be a parent, but the endless fun will reward you.

I love you Lucas.

A good progress

Lucas is having a good progress in his 9-month:

Two teeth come out.

Has a shaky stand-up for 5 seconds, without any support.

Speaks 'Yeah Yeah (grandpa), Daddy and Mama clearly. However, he doesn't know what these words mean. He will say 'Daddy' to his panda stuff toy.

When he refuses or rejects somethings, he says 'ng-ah' sometimes, sounds a bit like 'don't' in Cantonese.

Raises and claps his hands with meaning.

Loves to show off.

Stares at people in unfriendly way when he perceives him/her as an enemy.

Good kid Lucas

Lucas just had a nice long weekend with me and Jeff.

On Friday, I had an annual leave, we went to Daddy's working place and making Daddy to finish his work earlier. We then went to Chinese University and Tai Po park in the afternoon.

On Saturday, we went to the flower exhibition in Causeway Bay.

On Sunday, we visited PoPo, Kung Kung and auntie. We shared a great time together.

Lucas started to say 'Mama', especially when he is tired and wants to be attended.

He loves eating bread, apple, rice, and the food you drop on the table...

We are our kid's future

I am reading a very inspiring book about parenting - Children learn what they live.

This book is an elaboration of the world class poem with the same name by the same author, Dorothy Law Nolte, and Rachel Harris. It tells me it is what you do, not how you tell, influencing the growth of your kids. In two words, it is all about love and patience.

This is the famous poem since 1970's and enlightens countless of parents.

Children Learn What They Live By Dorothy Law Nolte, Ph.D. 1972
If children live with criticism, they learn to condemn.

If children live with hostility, they learn to fight.
If children live with fear, they learn to be apprehensive.
If children live with pity, they learn to feel sorry for themselves.
If children live with ridicule, they learn to feel shy.
If children live with jealousy, they learn to feel envy.
If children live with shame, they learn to feel guilty.
If children live with encouragement, they learn confidence.
If children live with tolerance, they learn patience.
If children live with praise, they learn appreciation.
If children live with acceptance, they learn to love.
If children live with approval, they learn to like themselves.
If children live with recognition, they learn it is good to have a goal.
If children live with sharing, they learn generosity.
If children live with honesty, they learn truthfulness.
If children live with fairness, they learn justice.
If children live with kindness and consideration, they learn respect.
If children live with security, they learn to have faith in themselves and in those about them.
If children live with friendliness, they learn the world is a nice place in which to live.

Everyone is imperfect, even our parents and grandparents are growing and learning how to face the world. Hope we all can walk path with our kids hands in hands!!

Shower Cap

Can't believe Lucas is scared of a shower cap.

Last weekend when I wore my shower cap, he laughed sweetly as usual. Then when he touched it, his smiling suddenly faded away and turned into a frightening cry. I guess he had not expected the soft texture of the shower cap.

Baby is also afraid those furry thing such as the fur trimmed loop which attached to my jacket, I cannot pull the hat up otherwise he will think I am a monster from the Monster Inc.

Working life is harsh and exhausted but I am willing to spend every minute with my kid at home, even though that means I have much less time to take rest. Three of us always have great time together. This morning, baby was groaning when I went out for work. I just wonder how can I leave him for even a second when he can ask me to stay with him literally.

Lucas is 9-month old!!!

Lucas reaches his 9 months today and also some milestones - his first teeth has just come out yesterday, and he can almost stand up without any support.

He is very talkative this few days. Every time when he sees me when I come back home, he babbles lot of things, seems to tell me what adventures he experienced before.

The speed of baby development is much faster than what you expect. He will do somethings that surprises you before you know how to react to it. Raising a baby is exhaustive and you may have to sacrifice something, but what you gain is much more valuable. Having a baby will also let you grow.

Sometimes I would really want to quit my job to be a full time mother. Then I may not be able to achieve self career attainment, but I can devote all my knowledge and time to my precious baby, which is actually more meaningful and fulfilling.

However, as what I mentioned previously, the street-smart-knowledge that a working mom can provide to the baby is also valuable, and she can greatly help the family in economic aspect. It is not bad to offer a shoulder to bear the financial burden of a family.

Lucas gives me a new definition of life.

Lucas knows how to wave people

Lucas can associate 'bye-bye' to waving hand. If you say good bye to him, he will wave his little hands fiercely. If he is exciting, he will wave both hands.

He had gotten flu since end December but he still cannot recovered 100%, now it develops coughing. The doctor prescribed anti-biotic to him in the second visit. I think he is a good doc because he doesn't use a fast but too strong way to let the baby get healed in order to impress the parents, instead, he prefers to let the kids to build the immune system by themselves first, and use anti-biotic if it is really necessary.

Guess what, now he has developed a concept of 'daddy & mommy are going to work'. When we say goodbye before work, he looks like he misses us. Luckily our family still have literally a bunch of persons can play with him while we leave.

When will he start walking? He can stand firm with holding some support, you can also see he is envious on Ching Ching who can walk. I have a gut feel that he can walk before his 1 year old.
